Review: Fiore Paula 40 DEN

If you saw my post titled “Polish Pattern Parade“, then you’re already aware that Poland has become a hotbed for hosiery production.  A number of brands have broken out of the local market and are now more commonly found internationally.  One of them is Fiore.  Here’s how they describe their company:

Fiore is one of the most dynamically developing hosiery manufacturers in Poland and Central Europe with over 120 different products for ladies and girls offered in a wide range of colours and sizes. Created in 1998, the company from the very beginning believes in the same strategy of combining the high quality of the products with prices that remain affordable to everyone.

The company was also one of the very first Polish hosiery producers to receive the ISO 9001 Quality Management Certificate. ISO 9001 is the most comprehensive of the ISO standards, covering product design, engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, marketing and sales. Commitment to quality has always been the basis for the company’s strategy and success. The receipt of the Certificate not only confirmed this, but also ensured that we continually strive for further improvement of quality and the full satisfaction of our customers’ needs.

In order to fully respond to the customers’ differentiated requirements the whole production has been divided into 6 lines:

  • Classic– Elegant and comfortable tights (pantyhose), knee-highs and socks for everyday and evening wear.
  • Medica– A variety of tights designed to correct the imperfections of woman’s figure.
  • Golden Line– Highly fashionable and sensuous patterned tights, hold-ups and stockings perfect to finish off any stylish ensemble.
  • Elite– Top quality hosiery products, made of the best materials in most advanced technologies.
  • Street– A range of tights and knee-highs trendily suited for the teenage market.
  • Young Lady– A line of cheerful and durable tights designed for girls of 110-146 cm height.

Given how their real start was in 1998, long after many European brands were enjoying tremendous financial success and recognition in fashion, I think they’ve come a long way in a relatively short time.

Well, first-hand experience is the only real way to validate marketing truth and it is different for each customer.  So far, I’ve experienced only one Fiore hosiery product, but I have to say that I’m impressed so far.

First Impression: Fiore packaging is excellent, featuring a full photo appearance on front and back in a fully enclosed cardboard sleeve.  Hosiery is wrapped around smooth cardboard stock and inserted in a cellophane sleeve.  Immediately I could tell the fabric is very good quality and is super slick/smooth to the touch (thanks to microfiber).  It doesn’t snag easily.

I’m much more into an opaque look, but decided to give these 40 denier tights a try to experience a more sheer effect for myself.  Fiore has a 5 size scale, and the largest comes with a back panel.  I’m not very keen on back panels, but I didn’t have any choice.  According to Fiore, size 5 (“V”) should fit me.

Fiore size chart

Sizing: I’m 95kg/183cm and these fit very well.  I could see someone another 5kg fitting, but not much more.  Based on the chart, the maximum height looks to be 180cm, but can probably handle 185cm.  I did have to pull up a bit more, which lost some opacity, but they achieved a good snug fit with the waistband above my navel.

Fabric and Seams: Right away I was impressed with the feel of the fabric, which creates an enhanced tactile sensation.  It’s a bit shiny, though… however, these aren’t a matte style anyway. The reinforced toe is really invisible.  But more importantly, the back panel seams didn’t feel prominent like they have with other brands.  This is probably due to the flat seam construction and the seams coming up higher than on other hosiery (so they do not interfere with a proper fit).

The waist band is OK, rather subtle, and doesn’t roll down easily.  There is no brand or size identification anywhere on it.

Durability: So, I wore these for a full day and into the next morning, for a full day durability test.  Amazingly enough, there was no bagging at the knees–the fabric remained resilient and snug.  When I took them off, I could see that they were stretched, but after a day they recovered most of their shape.

Value: I bought these from an EU retailer and got a decent price with a non-EU discount (€3.12).  I’d say they are worth the price.  I’m encouraged to try some of their other styles, as they do have some in 60 and 100 Denier.  Unfortunately their “Elite” category does not feature a size “V”… which is disappointing because the Raisa 120 den looks terrific.

Specifications:

  • Fabric – 86% nylon (polyamide) and 14% elastane (microfiber).
  • Sizing – Accurate. See chart above.
  • Opacity (0 – sheer, 10 – total opaque) – 4 when standing, 3 when bending (will probably show less opaque with darker colors).
  • Durability (0 – frail, 10 – like steel) – 7
  • Waistband – 2.5cm width, thin material, and very soft.
  • Support – none, but snug fit.
  • Reinforcement – back panel and invisible toes.
  • Features – flat seams, no obvious division between leg and panty.
  • Colors – Strangely, the Fiore website only previews the styles and does not show the range of colors available.  From one retailer, I saw 6 colors (black, brown, cappuccino {beige}, graphite, green, and violet).

I have to say for anyone who enjoys semi-opaque hosiery, you can’t go wrong with the Paula 40 DEN.  Please post your impressions if you’ve tried this style.  I’m curious about how they hold up for the long term.  TightsFashion UK reviewed these and felt a little less enthused, compared to other Fiore styles they’ve tried.

Incidentally, the owner of the blog Hosiery For Men wrote a review of the Fiore Raisa 120 DEN style and it turned out rather favorably.  Definitely give it a read.  🙂
